This is a form of behaviour which only makes sense when the survival of the species or the group is considered rather than that of individuals. A blackbird will put itself into danger to warn of the presence of a predator, humans may rush into dangerous situations to rescue others who they don’t even know. Such odd behaviour only makes sense if it is concerned with maintaining the survival of the species at the expense of the individual organism.
