ATP or Adenosine triphosphate is the main energy storage molecule in organisms. It consists of a molecule of adenine with three phosphates attached to it.

The third phosphate group requires considerable energy to bond it into place on the adenosine diphosphate molecule and when the bond is broken this energy is released for doing work within the cell.
