Monomers, dimers and polymers

Most large molecules in organisms are built up from simpler molecules or monomers. The monomers are bonded together by the process of condensation and the polymer formed may have many hundreds of simpler monomers making up its structure. The polymer may be broken down into separate monomers by the process of hydrolysis.

Monomers

Proteins are polymers composed of amino acid monomers.

Dimers

Starch and cellulose are polymers of glucose.
