The mitochondria (singular: mitochondrion) is the site of much of the respiratory chemistry of the cell.

The matrix contains a loop of DNA, ribosomes and the enzymes to run the Kreb's cycle while on the inner membrane are the cytochromes which act as carriers for the electrons that are derived from hydrogen collected from pyruvic acid molecules. The energy released from these electrons is used for the production of ATP.
