The Plant Stem

 

The stem is shown in transverse section in the diagram above. It is designed to support the plant against gravity and to allow the translocation of materials. It must also be resistant to the action of winds and passing animals and must be strong but flexible. The central vascular bundle of the root is broken up into a number of separate smaller peripheral bundles, which give better support and greater flexibility, whilst retaining the ability to transport water and organic substances.
